First queen and king

The first Miss Destin Rodeo Queen was Miss Jean Brunson-Graves and Larry Hayslip served as the Rodeo King in 1951. To the best of our knowledge he was the only King ever of the Rodeo. This photo is from the Fifty Years of Fishing The Destin Fishing Rodeo, and Arturo’s Studio.

Times are a changing – According to an ad in the Playground Daily News, the cost was $3 for the entire Rodeo. Today the cost is any where from $125 to $325 depending on the size of your boat.

First king

Here you go – the first and only king mackerel brought in during the first-ever Rodeo was hauled in on Mystery with Capt. Howard and Bruce Marler. The mackerel was pulled in by a lady from Mississippi and it weighed 36 pounds and 2 ounces. This you might recognize is the front cover of the Fifty Years of Fishing The Destin Fishing Rodeo.
