Big finish for a great Rodeo

What a great day and a great finish for the 62nd annual Destin Fishing Rodeo. We had 31 days of fishing with no rain. This last week was a little rough on the Gulf — But today, “was beautiful” said Capt. Brady Bowman. Bowman’s Perfect Shot was the second to last boat to weigh in on the last day of the Rodeo. Scott Gallagher hauled in a 20-pound grouper for a daily award. The last boat to pull in was… Read More »

Rodeo Day 29

Walked up to the docks around quarter to five and the judges were just kind of hanging out chatting a way. “I think we’ve had about a dozen or so today,” said Mike Raim. He along with Anne Windes had been there since 2 p.m. and hadn’t seen much action but were appreciative of the nice weather. David Windes was also on the scene, so far no fish, but everyone in the bleachers seemed to be enjoying their Friday afternoon… Read More »

Flat fish make the board

Although there were a half dozen or more fish brought to the docks this afternoon, only a few actually got on the board. And the two that broke onto the board were both flat fish — a triggerfish and a flounder. Justin Hogg who was fishing with Capt. Craig Mann on the Gulf Winds brought in a 2.6-pound triggerfish for a spot on the daily board. Capt. Mann said it was pretty rough out today. “It blew up to about… Read More »

Special catches on the K

We finally got some fish in today – well at least more than three. Some of the first to come to the scales were brought in on the Special K with Capt. Andy Vaughn. Bill Day got on the board with a couple of dailies. He weighed in a 22.4-pound blackfin tuna and a 41-pound amberjack. Lee Cardwell, who was also on the Special K, weighed in a 17.6-pound grouper. His grouper held until about 4:10 when an angler from… Read More »

Don’t go hatin’ on Don’t Hate

Well we finally got a fish in at the Rodeo this afternoon. Capt. Scott Whitehurst of the charterboat Don’t Hate pulled in with a fish that made it on the board for a daily award. David Puett of Fort Walton Beach was the angler on the rod that pulled in a 7-pound grouper. I know that doesn’t sound that big – but when the water is as rough as it was today – that’s big. I’d say any fish is… Read More »

Slower than slow

Not much happening at the Rodeo today. Weighmaster Bruce Cheves said part of the problem is the rough seas. “It’s no fun to go on a day like today … It wouldn’t be very comfortable,” he said. Word is – the Gulf is kicking up 4 to 6 feet seas. Maybe tomorrow will be better day. — Tina Harbuck Posted with WordPress for BlackBerry.
